Gerard Ainsworth

I am an experienced consultant ophthalmic surgeon who has worked within the NHS for over 16 years. My expertise is in cataract surgery with over 15,000 cataract surgeries and the management of glaucoma and corneal disease. I am experienced in providing a wide range of lens options including multifocal and extended depth of focus lenses to reduce spectacle dependence, and toric lenses to correct astigmatism. I also have a long and extensive experience in corneal refractive laser surgery.

I have acted as clinical director for ophthalmology at North Cumbria Integrated NHS Care Trust and have a keen interest in improving surgical outcomes and patient experience. I am friendly and approachable to patients and colleagues.

I am a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and sit on the faculty for microsurgical skills training which involves training junior surgeons. I also hold a postgraduate diploma in cataract and refractive surgery.

I am married with two children and am a keen outdoor enthusiast and love walking my black Labrador in the Lakeland fells. I’m also a qualified ski instructor.
