Astigmatism setting

What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a common condition where the eye is irregularly shaped: instead of like a football, it’s shaped more like a rugby ball. This causes light to focus unevenly on the back of the eye, leading to blurred or distorted vision.

Astigmatism can be corrected during cataract surgery with special lenses called toric lenses. All our lenses – monofocal, extended focus and multifocal – are available as ‘toric’ versions. These are special lenses that can correct astigmatism.

To personalise the lens simulator, please select the level of your astigmatism, either moderate blurring of vision when uncorrected, or more significant.

More about our lenses

During cataract surgery, your cloudy lens is replaced with a lens implant. We provide our NHS patients with the leading monofocal lens as standard. However, you may want to consider our private lenses – extended focus and multifocal – to reduce the need for glasses.

We’ll talk you through all the options, but here’s a quick guide.

Monofocal lens

This lens has a single focus point, so your vision will be corrected for distance or near, but not both.

Extended focus lens

This lens improves vision from arm’s length to distance. The need for glasses is likely to be reduced, but you may still need them for very close-up work like reading small print.

Multifocal lens

This lens corrects vision at three points of focus, which means clearer vision close up, at arm’s length and for distance. A multifocal lens helps to significantly reduce the need for glasses after cataract surgery.
