Glynn Barrington has described how NHS surgery at Newmedica Leicester has restored his sight and transformed his day-to-day life — from playing snooker to living without contact lenses for the first time in 40 years.
Having relied on contact lenses for most of his adult life, Glynn faced increasing difficulties with his vision, including a detached retina.
‘I’d always needed lenses — without them I couldn’t see anything,’ he explained. ‘After I had the detached retina corrected, I was told I’d develop a cataract, and sure enough, I did. Eventually, I had cataracts in both eyes.’
It was during a routine check-up with his optician that the cataracts were confirmed, and Glynn was referred to Newmedica Leicester for cataract surgery through the NHS.
‘My optician recommended Newmedica, saying he’d sent other patients there and had only heard positive things. The best part was I could get seen straight away, without the long wait I’d have had elsewhere.’
Despite the prospect of eye surgery, Glynn felt calm and confident about the procedure.
‘I’m not really a nervous person. After having gone through retinal surgery, cataracts didn’t faze me,’ he said. ‘From the moment I arrived, everyone at Newmedica was so friendly — they relaxed you straight away. It was such a smooth process; I was seen more or less immediately, so I didn’t even have time to worry.’
Glynn underwent his first cataract operation in November and returned more recently to have the second eye treated.
Now, the difference is clear — literally.
‘It’s great, really. It’s totally different from before,’ he said. ‘I play pool and snooker regularly, and now I can actually see the balls clearly — and pot them. For once, I’ve got no excuse for missing.’
So impressed was Glynn with his experience, he has since recommended Newmedica to family members.
‘My father-in-law’s now had both eyes done as well. I just found the whole process slick, professional, and friendly. Everyone there makes it so easy.’
In addition to cataract surgery, Newmedica Leicester provides NHS and private eye care services including YAG laser capsulotomy, medical retina services including wet AMD diagnosis and treatment and the clinic will soon offer an NHS glaucoma treatment and monitoring service to help patients regain their sight and quality of life.
The clinic, which is based at Grove Park in Leicester, is owned and led by consultant ophthalmologists Dr Ricardo Peixoto, Ms Rishika Chaudhary, Ms Rupal Morjaria and Ms Li Jiang alongside operations director and partner Megan da Silva.
Megan da Silva said: ‘We’re proud to provide a high-quality, patient-focused service here in Leicester. It’s incredibly rewarding to hear how patients like Glynn regain not just their vision, but also their independence and confidence.
‘At Newmedica, our aim is always to make the journey as smooth and stress-free as possible — and feedback like this reinforces the care and commitment of our whole team.’
