A former Professor of Orthopaedics and ordained Anglican minister has praised the life-changing work of staff at a Birmingham eye clinic.
Professor Rab Mollan has endured decades of issues with his sight, including astigmatism, which causes blurred distance and near vision.
In the past year he also developed cataracts in both eyes – a condition that can lead to vision loss and potentially blindness if left untreated.
His daughter, a Professor of Neuro-ophthalamology, recommended that he go to Newmedica Birmingham, an eye health clinic and surgical centre based in Aston Cross Business Village.
Professor Mollan, whose ministerial work has taken him around the globe, including Africa, said: “I developed cataracts and, combined with other congenital problems with my eyes, I found that it was interfering with aspects of my life.
“The surgeon was aware of my other sight conditions, so he did some extra work. After having the surgery, the outcome is much better than I hoped for.
“The change in my vision is dramatic. I’ve been wearing glasses since the age of six, but I no longer need glasses except to read. I’m so pleased. Everything is so bright and clear now, and I can see a whole new world around me.
“The entire experience at Newmedica Birmingham was excellent, and I want to give my deepest gratitude to everyone at the clinic for their caring expertise and for giving me a new visual life.”
Newmedica Birmingham is owned and run by consultant ophthalmologists Professor Sai Kolli, Mr Aaron Ng, Mr Ash Sharma and Mr Velota Sung, as well as Operations Director Rachel Hill.
Professor Kolli, who undertook Professor Mollan’s surgery, said: ‘As a respected medical professional himself, Prof Mollan was also an excellent patient. I’m delighted that the outcome of his surgery has made such a difference to his life.
“I know he agrees that people have no need to worry about cataract surgery or delay their treatment.
“The surgery is quick, painless and life-changing, giving people their independence and the life they deserve.”
Newmedica Birmingham clinic offers cataract surgery alongside a range of other eyecare treatments, including glaucoma, oculoplastics, age-related macular degeneration management, and YAG Laser, which is used to treat some cases of glaucoma and correct complications that can very occasionally occur after cataract surgery.
