How to Raise Awareness for World Sight Day 2025

World Sight Day takes place each year on the second Thursday in October. For 2025, World Sight Day falls on October 9th, and there’s lots to get involved in.

What is World Sight Day?

The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of eye health through campaigns, workshops, sharing unique stories and much more. There are several ways to get involved, from in-person events to online campaigns. Let’s take a look at some of these.

How You Can Raise Awareness

Eye health challenges & activities

IAPB are holding a global challenge where people can host vision screenings in ministries, parliaments, and locations where important policies are made. If you’re interested, you can sign up on their website.

The charity Sight Savers is also holding something called the #EyeCreation challenge. This involves creating your own eye shapes using anything you like and accompanying this with a few lines or a short video about the impact eye care has had on your life and why it’s important to you. You can see some examples on their website.

Community events or workshops

Orbis is holding a photo booth event from October 8th to 10th in the ticket hall at King’s Cross. You pay to have a photo of your iris taken and receive beautiful artwork in return. This money goes towards supporting Orbis’s work, which involves saving people’s sight.

If you’re near Belfast, then Queen's University Belfast have organised a programme for World Sight Day. On October 9th, they’ll have an international line-up of speakers who will share their expertise, thoughts, and insights. Be sure to get your tickets while they’re still available.

Photography competitions

The World Sight Day Photo Competition encourages participants to share images that celebrate the impact of eye care and its importance. Whether you’re a professional or an amateur photographer, you can enter if you have an eye-related story to share through photography. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the World Sight Day Photo Competition, and the IAPB says it’s their “biggest and best competition yet”. The competition comes to a close on October 16th, and the winners will be announced on November 4th, so it’s time to get your entries prepared and submitted.

Share your story

This year, the IAPB are encouraging people to share their unique stories related to eye health through their Every Story Counts campaign. They’re putting these together to create a collection of powerful stories which you can read on their website. If you have a story to share, you can get involved with this campaign to inspire others and raise awareness.

On World Sight Day, many people also share their stories and experiences on social media. Consider using the hashtags #LoveYourEyes and #WorldSightDay in your social media posts to raise awareness about World Sight Day.
