When getting cataract surgery, there are various factors to consider, such as which lens type you want and whether you’d rather have private or NHS cataract surgery. Choices like these can affect the overall price you pay for your cataract surgery. Let’s take a closer look.
The standard replacement used on the NHS is called a monofocal lens, which improves your vision for a specific distance (like far away or up close). Cataract surgery is available for free on the NHS, and patients who receive cataract treatment on the NHS won’t have to pay any additional costs.
There are other factors which affect the price of your cataract surgery, which we’ll explore in this article.
Before your surgery, several steps will be carried out, such as eye tests and measurements, a conversation about the lens options available, and the opportunity to address any questions you have.
Cataract surgery involves removing your cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear, artificial lens, a procedure that takes around 10-20 minutes to complete. When you come to Newmedica, our theatre teams will be there to ensure you feel completely comfortable throughout the surgery.
Once surgery is complete, you may be given an eye shield to protect your eyes from accidental damage, particularly when you go to sleep. You’ll be prescribed eye drops to prevent infection from occurring and to help with healing. You’ll also be given specific aftercare advice, such as when and how to use your eye drops, and it’s important to follow this.
At Newmedica, we’ll give you a call the next day to check in, and a follow-up appointment will take place a few weeks later. If you have any urgent concerns, you’ll also have access to an emergency helpline.
Expert Cataract Surgery for NHS and Private patients across England, with the markets high quality lens.
The cost of cataract surgery depends on whether you choose private or NHS treatment. If you receive NHS-funded treatment, this is free, with no additional cost to you. Going private means you can choose a different lens type if you’d like, and doing this could reduce your dependency on glasses after your surgery. This will also affect the price of your surgery, as specialist lenses are more expensive compared to a standard monofocal lens replacement. If you have astigmatism, a toric lens can correct this, but this is not generally offered on the NHS. Although cataract surgery always involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear artificial one, the surgical techniques used can vary, and these range in cost.
If you have medical insurance that covers cataract treatment, some or all of your cataract treatment costs will be covered by the insurer.
At Newmedica, we want private surgery to be an option for more patients, so we’ve teamed up with Novuna to offer 0% finance for 10 months on treatments that are over £1,000. Applying for finance is easy and convenient; the whole process only takes a few minutes and is secure and simple. Our staff will be happy to explain what is needed to process an application. Please note, this isn’t available at Newmedica Norwich.
