Learn all about Orla Fisher, Clinical Assistant at Newmedica Suffolk, and her apprenticeship journey in healthcare support.
Orla realised her passion for science whilst at school, which led her to study chemistry, biology and psychology at college. It was whilst Orla was at college that she carried out work experience at Ipswich Hospital, where she realised how interesting it was to work behind the scenes.
Unsure on what her next steps were after college, but knowing that she wanted to work in healthcare, Orla applied for a clinical assistant role at Newmedica, back in 2024. After just a couple of weeks of joining Newmedica, Orla began her Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeship which she's currently on track to complete by June 2026.
As part of her diploma, Orla's researched various topics such as safeguarding, physiological measurements, and infection prevention control.
As well as writing assignments, and question and answer sessions, an apprenticeship assessor visits Orla at Newmedica Suffolk to observe her every few months, which goes towards her apprenticeship as evidence to support her assignments.
How Orla balances work alongside an apprenticeship
With a designated study day each week, Orla is able to make time to complete her apprenticeship work.
Orla is further supported by her managers and colleagues who make sure she has time to fulfil her apprenticeship requirements. Being sure to get Orla as involved as possible to further support her apprenticeship, her manager has arranged for Orla to observe in the theatre and watch oculoplastic procedures take place, which gives a nice insight into the patient experience.
What's next for Orla?
Carrying out an apprenticeship to gain real life experience within healthcare was Orla's main focus, however as she looks ahead to the future, she's excited to gain further qualifications which can help her to progress and provide the best care to patients.
For anyone else who's considering an apprenticeship, Orla says go for it!
