Mr Kirkpatrick, consultant ophthalmologist, says: ‘The greatest threat to sight for glaucoma patients after delayed diagnosis is missed follow up. The delays are often discussed and are known to exist across all NHS trusts - but the government does not have any mandate to measure them.
‘The lack of information generally and the number of NHS trusts admitting to large numbers of delayed patients is a worry.
‘This bill therefore has the potential to help prevent avoidable sight loss. A community glaucoma service across England would build on prompt detection of the condition already provided by expert optometrists. It would also enable more qualified optometrists to manage low-risk glaucoma cases in the community.’
He adds: ‘The bill should specify clear performance targets to avoid follow up delays. Further, it should facilitate - by means of money and pathways - the delivery of low-risk glaucoma care in the community. This would enable NHS trusts to focus on complex surgery and care for the high-risk cases.’
‘It’s important to remember too that for every delayed diagnosis or missed follow-up appointment, there’s a person potentially at risk of losing their independence, experiencing falls and loneliness. These challenges also increase the pressure on NHS services.
‘With glaucoma cases projected to rise in the coming year, it is more important than ever, for primary and secondary eye care professionals to collaborate to deliver timely and accessible care and treatment. Together, optometry and ophthalmology, we can help meet the challenge of glaucoma for the benefit of patients. We can make a real difference, so every patient has the best opportunity to preserve their sight, independence and quality of life.’
