Meet Rukan Avcil

This World Optometry Week we're shining a spotlight on Newmedica Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich optometrist, Rukan Avcil, and her optometry journey so far.

Hi, I'm Rukan!

I grew up in London and I’m currently working as an optometrist at Newmedica in Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich, sharing my time between both eye clinics.

How did I get here?

I have always been drawn to healthcare and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s daily lives. Optometry stood out to me because it combines detailed clinical decision making with genuine patient connection.

I began my optometry journey at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge and started my pre-registration training at Specsavers Newmarket. During this time, the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Despite the uncertainty, I was fortunate to continue seeing patients for minor eye conditions and emergency appointments. This period was incredibly educational, providing hands-on experience and extensive exposure to a wide range of ocular pathologies, experiences I might not have encountered otherwise!

Once qualified, I continued as a full-time optometrist at Specsavers, developing a particular interest in dry eye syndrome and establishing a dedicated dry eye clinic. Seeking an even more clinical focus, I then moved to Newmedica, where I now manage cataract and glaucoma clinics and perform YAG capsulotomies.

Alongside my clinical work, I'm also a member of the Local Optical Committee LOC, supporting collaboration between primary and secondary eye services and initiatives that benefit the local optometry community.

I've also recently started my Independent Prescribing course and am excited about the opportunities it will bring to further expand my clinical practice and patient care.

Why Newmedica?

Newmedica represents the direction I believe optometry is moving towards. The close collaboration between optometrists and ophthalmologists, combined with a strong focus on patient centered care, creates an environment where optometrists can practice at an advanced clinical level.

What particularly appeals to me is Newmedica’s commitment to developing clinicians and supporting extended roles. It provides the opportunity to continue growing clinically while contributing to high quality care for patients within our community.

What's the most fulfilling part of your role?

It's seeing the direct impact that good eye care has on a patient’s quality of life. Whether it’s reassuring an anxious patient, performing a YAG capsulotomy, or detecting early signs of pathology, these moments are incredibly rewarding.

I also enjoy being part of a team environment where learning never stops. Continuously developing clinical skills and sharing knowledge keeps me motivated and helps me grow as a clinician.
