A leading eye health clinic is marking its third anniversary after supporting thousands of people across Oxfordshire with sight-saving treatment and making a growing contribution to the community.
Newmedica Oxfordshire first opened its doors on 5 December 2022 and has since welcomed just over 10,000 new NHS and private patients, carrying out more than 30,000 appointments, procedures and treatments.
The service, based in Abingdon, now has a 27-strong team, 10 of whom have been with the clinic since day one, with a further 10 joining in 2023. The team has also continued to develop skills and qualifications, with five colleagues supported through the theatre scrub nurse programme and eight completing Optical Assistant training.
In February 2025, the clinic expanded its services by introducing NHS oculoplastic procedures, which now account for 10% of its surgeries, alongside cataract treatment and YAG laser for both NHS and private patients. Cataract procedures remain the clinic’s core activity, making up around 80% of its surgery.
Durgesh Patel, Operations Director and Partner, says: ‘Celebrating three years in Oxfordshire is a tremendous moment for our team. From the outset, our focus has been to deliver safe, timely and compassionate care for every patient who walks through our doors. Treating 10,000 NHS patients means we’ve made a real contribution to easing local waiting lists, ensuring people receive the treatment they need without delay.
‘We’re proud of the dedication of our staff, the investment we’ve made in training and development, and the support we’ve received from patients and local optometrists. As we look ahead, we remain committed to growing our services and continuing to deliver outstanding care for the community.’
Alongside its clinical work, the clinic has played an active role in supporting local and international causes. Staff and patients have raised £2,625 for charities, including Thames Valley Air Ambulance and My Vision, and have donated to Abingdon Food Bank four times over the past two years. Funds were raised through voluntary donations for tea, coffee and micropore tape, as well as direct contributions from patients and staff.
The clinic, which is based in Abingdon, is owned and led by Consultant Ophthalmologists Mandeep Singh, Melanie Chak, Markus Groppe and Moustafa Issa alongside Operations Director and Partner Durgesh Patel.
Newmedica Oxfordshire Eye Health Clinic & Surgical Centre provides NHS and private treatment for cataracts, YAG laser procedures and oculoplastic surgery, supporting patients referred by their GP or local optometrist.
