David Lunt
Consultant Ophthalmologist
Consultant Ophthalmologist
Originally from Liverpool, David moved to the North East to study, graduating from Newcastle University in 2009 with additional honours from Durham University. During his first seven years in ophthalmology, he rotated across the region, spending much of his career getting to know and caring for the local community. He was later selected for the prestigious Clinical Glaucoma Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London, where he trained under world-leading glaucoma specialists including Professor Sir Peng Khaw and Professor Gus Gazzard.
This experience enabled David to learn innovative surgical and outpatient care techniques, many of which he has since introduced locally, benefitting patients over the past six years since returning to the North. His clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of glaucoma care—from assessing patients at risk of developing the condition to managing advanced cases where every decision is critical. He is fully qualified and experienced in all glaucoma laser procedures, including iridotomy and selective laser trabeculoplasty; a wide range of modern minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS); as well as traditional glaucoma operations such as trabeculectomy and aqueous shunt surgery. In addition, David performs high-volume, high-complexity cataract surgery, completing more than one thousand procedures each year. He specialises in challenging cases, particularly those involving both glaucoma and cataract, and frequently offers supplementary procedures such as stent placement to help restore the eye’s natural drainage function.
