Learning while doing: How an apprenticeship transformed my career
Learning while doing: How an apprenticeship transformed my career
We hear from Jack who’s building a new career through an apprenticeship.
Career journey before Newmedica
I originally went to university to study psychology. After graduating, I spent a year teaching English in China before returning to the UK to work in a COVID‑19 laboratory. I later applied to Newmedica as an HCA and then moved into the Scrub Technician role when it became available.
My role at Newmedica
I currently work as a Scrub Technician. My role involves preparing surgical equipment for the surgeon both before and during procedures to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Reason for choosing an apprenticeship
I discovered that I really enjoy working in an operating theatre, particularly through my scrubbing responsibilities. I’m keen to develop my knowledge of more complex surgeries and anaesthetic care so I can play a greater role across perioperative areas. The apprenticeship allows me to learn and work simultaneously, applying new knowledge directly to my role.
How I balance my role with my studies
I have dedicated time allocated to university work, and I organise my assignments and study activities around this and my usual workload. Because much of the content links directly to my day‑to‑day duties, the practical experience reinforces what I learn in lectures.
Support from Newmedica during my studies
Alongside funding my apprenticeship, Newmedica has given me opportunities to observe surgeries in other hospitals and supported time away for external placements. We also have an abundance of knowledgeable staff who are always happy to explain new concepts in more depth and answer any questions I have.
Why I’d recommend apprenticeships at any age
Apprenticeships are a great opportunity for anyone who wants to learn while working. They’re especially valuable later in life when the traditional university route may not be practical, affordable or appealing. They also allow you to get a true feel for the job before committing to further study - something that university courses rarely provide, as many students don’t experience the reality of the role until much later

Why I’d recommend an apprenticeship to anyone
I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship, regardless of age or stage of life. It’s a practical, accessible way to develop your career while earning, learning on the job, building confidence, and making meaningful connections.
For anyone worried about returning to education after a long break - I’ve been there. With organisation, enthusiasm, and the right support around you, it’s absolutely achievable. Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers; they’re for anyone ready to invest in themselves and take the next step.
For me, choosing an apprenticeship, twice, has shaped my career, opened doors I didn’t think were available, and reminded me that it’s never too late to learn, grow, and change direction”.
