The only treatment available for cataracts at the moment is surgery, and this procedure can greatly improve your vision. During the surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial one called an intraocular lens. It only takes around 15 minutes to complete, and many people actually see better than they did before they developed cataracts.
Langford Cataract surgery: what to expect at Newmedica
Our friendly team will deliver high-quality care and support throughout your cataract treatment.
Before surgery:
We’ll test your current vision before you have your surgery. We’ll also perform a biometry test, which takes your eye measurements so your consultant can ensure that your new replacement lens is the right one for you. Our clinical assistants will go through some relevant health checks and talk you through the procedure and explain what’s involved. Your consultant will then check your eyes to make sure there’s nothing that could affect your surgery and will discuss your available lens options. If you have any questions, they’ll be happy to answer them for you as well.
During surgery:
The majority of cataract operations are done under a local anaesthetic, either by using eye drops or putting anaesthetic around the eye (there won’t be needles involved in this). Your consultant will make a very small incision in your eye to remove your cloudy lens and replace it with the artificial one. You’ll be awake for the procedure and may be able to see movement around your eye, but you won’t be able to feel anything. Our Langford theatre team will talk you through everything they’re doing, and they’ll do what they can to ensure you feel comfortable throughout your operation. If you’re feeling anxious, they can hold your hand to help you feel at ease.
After surgery:
Once your surgery is finished, we may recommend placing a small plastic shield over your eye to protect it from any accidental damage. Your consultant will prescribe you with eye drops, which you’ll need to use for about three weeks. Before you leave our eye clinic, we’ll explain exactly when and how you need to use them. You can return home on the same day as your surgery, but you won’t be able to drive. We’ll give you a call the next day to check in on you and make sure you’re happy with everything. We’ll arrange follow-up appointments to ensure your recovery is going as it should and that your vision is clear.

Perks of private cataract surgery
There are a number of reasons why many of our patients choose the private route for cataract treatment.
You may have to wait a little longer to receive NHS-funded cataract surgery because the NHS have certain thresholds, usually linked to impact on vision, to qualify for NHS cataract treatment. If you decide to go private for your cataract surgery, you can have the procedure when you feel that your vision is impacting your lifestyle. This means you won’t necessarily have to meet the local NHS guidelines.
During cataract surgery, your cloudy lens is replaced with an artificial one. The lens type you choose will determine how well you see without your glasses after your cataract surgery. The standard replacement used on the NHS is called a monofocal lens, and this improves your vision for a certain distance (like up close or far away). When getting private cataract surgery, you can still have a monofocal lens replacement, but you’ll open up your options and can choose from our specialist lenses. Deciding to have a different lens type could reduce your dependency on glasses after your surgery (at an additional cost). This includes:
Extended focus: this lens type provides a continuous focus over a range of distances.
Multifocal: this lens type is for good distance, intermediate and close-up vision.
If you have astigmatism (when the cornea at the front of the eye is more like a rugby ball shape than a football), you can get the right correction incorporated into any of these specialist lenses. This type of corrective lens is called a toric, which might sound familiar if you wear contact lenses.
