What is Age-related Macular Degeneration?
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition that primarily affects older adults. It is one of the leading causes of vision loss among people aged 65 and older. AMD occurs when the macula, a small central portion of the retina, deteriorates over time, leading to a gradual loss of central vision.
What types of AMD are there?
Wet Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Wet age-related macular degeneration often occurs in individuals who have previously experienced the dry form of AMD. Those affected by wet AMD usually notice a rapid change in their central vision, often in just one eye. If you experience unusual symptoms, such as straight lines appearing wavy or blurry central vision (known as visual distortion), it is crucial to contact an optometrist immediately.
Dry Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Dry AMD is the more prevalent form of macular degeneration and impacts your ability to see fine details. It progresses gradually, so many people may not notice a change in their vision at first. However, over time, you may find it increasingly challenging to read, watch television, drive, and use your computer.

Worcester AMD Treatment options
Wet AMD: can be treated with a type of injection called anti-VEGF (anti-vascular endothelial growth factor). VEGF is responsible for developing healthy blood vessels in the body – but with wet AMD, there is too much of this substance, which causes the extra, unhealthy, leaky blood vessels to grow. The injections will stop the substance from developing, and it will hopefully stabilise and improve your vision.
The injections will be carried out as a day procedure at our Worcester eye clinic but you'll need a few rounds of the injections regularly. Before the injections, you'll be given some dilating drops, so you will not be able to drive after you have had them.
Dry AMD: At the moment, there is no known cure for dry macula degeneration. However, by making lifestyle changes, you can help manage the condition. By quitting smoking and taking nutritional supplements, such as the AREDS2 formula, this may help to slow the progression of the disease.
