Ashley's apprenticeship upskilling journey
As National Apprenticeship Week 2026 shines a spotlight on alternative career pathways, Ashley Mills, Trainee Ophthalmic Technician at Newmedica, is a powerful example of how apprenticeships can open doors, change direction, and support lifelong learning- at any stage of life.
A journey that started with an apprenticeship
“I left school at 16 with an advanced engineering apprenticeship, sponsored by a company that employed me throughout the four-year programme and beyond. It gave me structure, real-world experience, and a strong work ethic from an early age; foundations that have stayed with me ever since. I remained with that company until 2020, but over time I began to feel ready for a change.
I’d always been interested in something more medical or clinical, but growing up, that path didn’t feel visible or encouraged. As I got older, I realised it wasn’t too late to explore a career that genuinely interested me. And that decision ultimately led me to Newmedica.
Finding my place
I joined Newmedica in May 2021 as a Clinic Assistant, and it quickly became clear I’d found an environment where I could grow. My role involved supporting patients directly, carrying out diagnostic tests and scans for cataract assessments and glaucoma clinics, as well as managing the essential administrative work behind the scenes - from booking appointments to managing clinic outcomes.
That hands-on exposure to patient care and diagnostics confirmed that this was the right direction for me. I wanted to keep learning, build my clinical knowledge, and take on more responsibility.
Today, I’m a Trainee Ophthalmic Technician, currently in the final stages of being signed off and promoted to a full Ophthalmic Technician. In this role, I carry out more complex diagnostic tests and imaging, explore patient medical histories in greater depth, check biometry plausibility, and support both Clinic Assistants and the wider clinical team. It’s a role that challenges me every day, and one I’m incredibly proud of.
Choosing an apprenticeship… again
Once I’d settled into Newmedica, I was keen to progress further. When the opportunity arose to apply for a degree apprenticeship in Healthcare Science: Ophthalmic Imaging, it felt like the moment everything aligned.
I’ll be honest: at 31 years old, the idea of returning to university was daunting. I worried about being an “older” student and whether I could balance everything. But my managers encouraged me to go for it, supported my application, and believed in my potential. That support gave me the confidence to take the leap.
Being selected for the apprenticeship felt like a turning point; a chance not just to advance my career, but to prove to myself that learning doesn’t stop once you leave school.
Balancing work, study and life
Balancing a demanding role alongside degree-level study hasn’t always been easy, but organisation has been key. I’m proactive with my workload, plan well ahead, and communicate clearly when support or flexibility is needed. I probably err on the side of being too organised - but that’s helped me stay ahead with assignments, manage multiple assessments, and maintain strong grades without becoming overwhelmed.
Learning while working has also meant that everything I study has real, practical relevance. I’m able to apply new knowledge directly in clinic, which makes the learning stick and keeps me motivated.
The power of support
One of the biggest reasons I’ve been able to succeed is the support from Newmedica. My manager and Team Leader have been incredibly proactive; protecting my weekly university study day in the rota, ensuring my workload is manageable, and fully accommodating block learning weeks and university commitments.
My mentor has been equally invaluable, coaching me through practical training, helping me develop new diagnostic techniques, and giving me the time and space to learn, practise and perfect my skills. That combination of academic learning and workplace mentorship has made all the difference.

Why I’d recommend an apprenticeship to anyone
I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship, regardless of age or stage of life. It’s a practical, accessible way to develop your career while earning, learning on the job, building confidence, and making meaningful connections.
For anyone worried about returning to education after a long break - I’ve been there. With organisation, enthusiasm, and the right support around you, it’s absolutely achievable. Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers; they’re for anyone ready to invest in themselves and take the next step.
For me, choosing an apprenticeship, twice, has shaped my career, opened doors I didn’t think were available, and reminded me that it’s never too late to learn, grow, and change direction”.
