Specialist patient hoist equipment to enhance safety, dignity, and access for patients with mobility needs has been introduced by a Barlborough ophthalmology provider.
Samantha Ellis, outpatient department manager for Newmedica Barlborough, says that the introduction of the hoist is part of Newmedica’s commitment to patient‑centred care in its NHS and private services.
‘The first patient to have benefited from the hoist was a cataract patient, supporting her care and treatment,’ she says. ‘What made this moment even more special was our patient’s incredible positivity, she was more than happy to be our first, had a great sense of humour throughout, and even suggested the hoist should be named after her.’
Ms Ellis adds: ‘Introducing the hoist has further expanded access to cataract surgery within our service to more people, ensuring we can support a wider range of patients safely and comfortably. This milestone is about enhancing patient safety, comfort, and independence, ensuring we continue to deliver the highest standards of care.’
The hoist allows clinical teams to assist patients who may otherwise struggle with transfers onto examination or surgical couches, reducing risk for both patients and the medical team while maintaining dignity and comfort.
‘For community optometrists, they can be confident that patients at Newmedica get quality care, treatment and outcomes – as well as improved access to care for patients with mobility needs,’ says Ms Ellis.
‘Knowing that ophthalmology providers such as Newmedica can accommodate these needs are important for patient choice conversations when patients are deciding which ophthalmology providers suits their requirements.’
