The only treatment available for cataracts at the moment is surgery, which can greatly improve your vision. Many patients discover that they actually see better than they did before developing cataracts. The procedure, which takes around 15 minutes, involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial clear one called an intraocular lens.
Bromsgrove Cataract surgery: what to expect at Newmedica
We’ll be there to support you throughout your cataract surgery and will hold your hand if you’re nervous.
Before:
We’ll assess your current vision before your surgery and carry out a biometry test, which involves taking measurements of your eye. By doing this, your consultant can be sure that your new replacement lens is the right one for you. Our clinical assistants will go through relevant health checks and explain what will happen during your surgery. Your consultant will then assess your eyes to check there’s nothing which could affect your surgery. They’ll then discuss the lens options we have at our Bromsgrove eye clinic and answer your questions if you have any.
During:
Most cataract surgeries are carried out under a local anaesthetic, and we won’t use a needle to do this. Instead, we will use either eye drops or anaesthetic around the eye. You’ll be awake during the procedure and might see some movement around your eye, but you won’t be able to feel anything. A tiny incision will be made in your eye to remove your cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial lens. Our Bromsgrove theatre team will be there to make sure you feel comfortable throughout the surgery and will talk you through everything they do.
After:
Once your surgery is finished, we may recommend popping a small plastic shield over your eye to guard it from any accidental damage. You’ll be prescribed eye drops by your consultant, and you’ll have to use them for around three weeks after your surgery. We’ll explain when and how to use them so you know what you’re doing. You’ll be able to go home on the same day, but you won’t be able to drive so will have to arrange transport. We’ll call you the day after your surgery to check in and see how you’re getting on. We’ll also arrange follow-up appointments so we can monitor your recovery and check that it’s going well.

How much does cataract surgery cost in Bromsgrove at Newmedica?
Private cataract surgery starts from £2,295 for each eye for a monofocal lens replacement. There are different specialist lens types available if you get private treatment, and we’ll explain clearly how much each one costs. To make pricing straightforward, you’ll be given a single fixed price to ensure there aren’t any hidden fees to catch you off guard. This means you’ll pay one price for your replacement lens, surgery, all medication, and all pre- and post-operative appointments.
If you’re getting NHS-funded treatment with us, then all of your treatment costs with Newmedica will be fully covered, without any additional cost to you.

Perks of private cataract surgery
There are multiple reasons why some of our patients decide to get private cataract treatment.
One reason is that you may find yourself waiting a little longer to get cataract surgery through the NHS. This is because the NHS have certain thresholds to qualify for NHS-funded cataract treatment, usually linked to impact on vision. When getting treated for cataracts privately, you don’t necessarily need to meet local NHS guidelines. Instead, you can decide to have the procedure when you feel that your vision is impacting your lifestyle.
Another reason many patients go private is because they would rather have a specialist lens type. During cataract surgery, your cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a lens implant, and the standard replacement used on the NHS is a monofocal lens. This can improve your vision for a certain distance (such as close-up or far). If you get private treatment, then you can still decide to have a monofocal lens, but you’ll also have specialist lenses to choose from. The lens you choose will determine how well you see after surgery when you don’t have your glasses on. This could also minimise your dependency on glasses (at an additional cost). These specialist options include:
Extended focus lens: this provides a continuous focus over a range of distances.
Multifocal lens: this provides good distance, intermediate and up-close vision
If you have astigmatism (when the cornea at the front of your eye is shaped more like a rugby ball than a football), then the right correction can be incorporated into any of these specialist lenses. This corrective lens is called a toric, which you might have heard of before if you wear contact lenses.
Private cataract treatment with Newmedica
We offer a range of high quality lenses for distance and intermediate vision starting from just £2295 per eye, so you can get back to doing what you love as quickly as possible.
