Newmedica strengthens optometry network with national clinical conference – benefitting patients

Newmedica has held a national conference for its optometrists and orthoptists – focused on professional development and expanding scope of practice.

The programme at the Nottingham conference on 27 June combined lectures, workshops and peer-led sessions, with up to 14 CPD points available, including specialty accreditation.

Topics reflected on the wide-range of sub-specialities optometrists and orthoptists deliver. This covered day-to-day clinical work: recognising post-operative cataract complications, refining diagnostic judgement, and building on already strong patient communication skills. In addition, glaucoma, oculoplastics and gonioscopy were also covered during the conference.

This wasn’t just about CPD - it was about building stronger clinical connections and giving colleagues the confidence to apply learning directly into practice.

A session led by Newmedica clinical glaucoma lead Richard Stead, a consultant ophthalmologist at Newmedica Nottingham, explored the use of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGs) and minimally invasive bleb surgery (MIBs) and the early identification of complications following surgery.

Meanwhile, Newmedica Worcester consultant ophthalmologist Julia Sen introduced the principles of oculoplastics. Alongside these, smaller group discussions focused on cataract pre-assessment and lens choice, encouraging clinicians to test their reasoning against that of colleagues.

What stood out most was the level of engagement - people weren’t just attending, they were contributing, questioning and sharing real clinical experiences. Events like this are great because learning is shared, standards are aligned and examples of fantastic practice are shared. It was brilliant to see our optometry and orthoptic network building stronger connections. Ultimately, it means patients benefit from great care provided by Newmedica whether they’re chosen the NHS or private treatment pathway.

Newmedica intends to repeat the conference annually, alongside ongoing work through its quarterly optometrist network, which brings clinicians together to share learning and shape practice.
