Vitreoretinal or VR surgery is a highly specialised subfield of ophthalmology which is designed to address issues in the retina, macula (the centre of the retina), and vitreous (the gel-like substance filling the eye). This includes conditions such as epiretinal membrane, vitreous floaters, macular hole, and retinal detachment. Vitreoretinal surgery is typically performed as a day-case procedure under local or general anaesthetic, so patients can usually go home the same day. Vitreoretinal surgery is one of the more niche ophthalmology subspecialties, so not every clinic in the UK offers it. At Newmedica, many of our clinics offer vitreoretinal surgery.
What to look for in a vitreoretinal surgeon
Vitreoretinal surgeons first complete extensive ophthalmology training, and then undergo a fellowship focused on vitreoretinal surgery. A surgeon with a high volume of procedures and strong success rates offers both experience and peace of mind. If they have experience with a range of vitreoretinal conditions and are familiar with advanced techniques and technology, this is another sign of clinical expertise. A good vitreoretinal surgeon will also take the time to provide tailored care by understanding your individual circumstances and discussing different treatment options, all while ensuring you feel informed.
