Runcorn resident urges others not to let fear stop them from life-changing eye surgery

A 72-year-old Runcorn woman has spoken about how cataract surgery has transformed her quality of life, independence and confidence – and is urging others not to let fear put them off treatment. 

Helen Cadwallader recently underwent cataract surgery in both eyes at Newmedica Cheshire Oaks after noticing a decline in her vision. After being informed by Specsavers Runcorn that the condition can lead to blindness, she knew she had to act quickly.   

She explained: ‘Before I had the surgery, everything had started going duller and duller - the world had lost all its sparkle. I wore glasses all the time and really struggled with distance vision, and it does knock your confidence. When your sight starts to go, it affects your freedom and independence, and that’s something I really value, especially as I don’t drive. 

‘I went to Specsavers Runcorn because of the deterioration in my vision and was referred on to Newmedica Cheshire Oaks for cataract surgery in both eyes. I was absolutely terrified about having the surgery - but it’s in your own interest. Once you know what’s happening, it can be really nerve-wracking. No-one could’ve been more frightened than me.  

‘From the moment I arrived, though, everyone was just so lovely and that made such a difference. Mr Gadhvi, who carried out my surgery, was so kind and reassuring and really put me at ease, as did all the staff there. You’re so well looked after - even offered refreshments and coffee - and you’re reassured constantly. I had my left eye done first and couldn’t believe how quickly it was over. The procedure itself was very quick and painless; you actually spend more time having drops, checks and making sure it’s the right person and the right eye than you do having the cataract done. 

‘A few weeks later I went back to have my right eye done, and my nerves were so much better. Because the clinic is around a 30-minute drive from where I live, they also arranged taxis to take me there and back on both occasions, which was so lovely and such a massive help. It was a real relief not having to worry about transport on top of the surgery itself. 

‘I couldn’t believe the difference afterwards. When you first have it done, everything is suddenly so much brighter - there’s more colour, more definition. I can see further now, especially when I’m out walking my dog, Kail. Getting my vision back has made me feel so much more confident in myself. I’m not massively confident as a person, but it honestly feels like being given a new lease of life - and a brand-new pair of eyes. Now I’m enjoying my regular dog walks and spending time on my canal boat with my husband that bit more. 

‘I would absolutely urge anyone who’s been putting it off because they’re frightened to go ahead and get it done. I know how scary it feels, but it has genuinely changed my life. Being able to see clearly again has given me my confidence back, my independence, and the freedom to enjoy the little things again.’

Mr Gadhvi, who carried out Helen’s surgery, said: ‘Cataracts are a very common eye condition that can develop when the eye’s clear lens forms cloudy or misty patches, usually as we get older. During surgery we remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a new, artificial lens.
