NHS Ophthalmology in Scotland

In late 2025, Mr Norman Harrison, from Larbert in Stirlingshire, attended his optometrist (Specsavers, Falkirk) after noticing a deterioration in his distance vision—particularly at night and in wet weather. Having driven around 40,000 miles a year before retiring, he was acutely aware of the legal eyesight standards for driving and was concerned about losing his license. For Mr Harrison, being able to drive is closely tied to both his and his wife’s independence, their everyday mobility and quality of life.

The optometrist confirmed that Mr Harrison had cataracts and advised him to have routine surgery. He was told the local NHS waiting list was around 14 months, alongside the option of self-funded treatment. Mrs Harrison had previously chosen private cataract surgery in Scotland several years ago, and the optometrist suggested Newmedica in Newcastle (part of the Specsavers group) as a potential provider. Following a subsequent discussion with Newmedica, a referral was recommended for assessment and treatment in Newcastle.

Although this involved travelling, Mr and Mrs Harrison were able to combine appointments with visiting their son, who lives in Newcastle, making assessment and surgery feasible as part of a weekend trip.

Mr Harrison underwent surgery on his first eye in February 2026. After a local post-operative check at Specsavers, Falkirk, he said it was the obvious choice, to schedule surgery on his second eye in March 2026. He is extremely happy with the quality of care provided by Newmedica Newcastle and, importantly, the improvement in his distance vision and driving confidence. He is now confident that he meets the legal requirement to read a vehicle number plate.

Having worn glasses since the age of 12, Mr Harrison says it feels unusual not to rely on them. At his final check-up at Specsavers, Falkirk, he expects to update his reading prescription and is likely to choose varifocal lenses for convenience and comfort. “I am using cheap reading glasses whilst I am in-between operations, and I miss having my glasses.”

Reflecting on the decision to seek private treatment, Mr Harrison said: “When my wife was working, she had private medical insurance that covered both of us, but typically I would use the NHS. Private medical insurance covered my diagnosis with glaucoma many years ago, but I have annual NHS check-ups and, thankfully, my condition remains stable.”

He added: “I don’t understand how we still have such long waiting times on the NHS in Scotland. When you read about the billions of pounds being invested with no obvious improvement in access, it can feel like the system is not delivering for patients.”

Mr Harrison concluded: “The NHS is a wonderful service. If I could access free, timely treatment in Scotland—delivered to the same standard as my experience with Newmedica in Newcastle, I would not hesitate to use it. I don’t understand why patients in Scotland cannot access care in the same way when, just across the border in England, people can.”
