Our surgeons

I was brought up in a medical family in Northern Ireland and attended Campbell College in Belfast. I studied medicine at Bristol University and was always intent on a surgical career. I am grateful to my close friend and colleague, Masoud Teimory, who convinced me to take up ophthalmology.

Junior posts were completed at Bristol University, St Thomas Hospital and Bristol Eye Hospital. I spent a period of five years as a registrar in Aberdeen with Professor John Forrester with a fellowship year in 1995 at Royal Perth Hospital Western Australia working with Dr Ian McAllister.

I have been a consultant in Gloucestershire since 1997 and have steadily built up my cataract and retinal surgery practice since that time. In more recent years I have been closely involved in developing efficient and award-winning services for the NHS with Newmedica.

I grew up and went to school in London before coming to Medical School in Bristol.  I trained in Ophthalmology in the Severn region with visiting fellowships in the US and now work as a consultant ophthalmologist with an interest in cataract and retina.

I have held roles as an advisor for the ophthalmology content of the British National Formulary (BNF) and provide ophthalmology opinions for both the BNF and the children's BNF.  I have a strong interest in research and continue to publish widely in the ophthalmic literature.

Furthermore, I have a strong interest in teaching and training with undergraduates and postgraduate trainees.  I have completed various post-graduate qualifications, am a fellow of the higher education academy and continue to be actively involved in teaching of ophthalmologists in addition to allied health professionals.

I undertook my original training as an ophthalmologist in Cheltenham (2001-2005) before completing a series of high-profile fellowships. The first in surgical retinal at the renowned Western Eye Hospital (2005) in London, and then a higher surgical fellowship in medical and surgical retinal diseases in Singapore (2006), where I was awarded the International Council of Ophthalmology Fellowship.

I pursued further training with a cornea and refractive surgery fellowship in University of San Diego, California (2007). During that time, I worked with a pioneering refractive surgeon at CODET Vision Institute, Tijuana, Mexico.
